Equine Wellness/Preventative Medicine

Vaccinations

Vaccines are our most effective way to manage diseases in our four legged family members. Deciding which vaccines you need may be hard to do. Asking your veterinarian for recommendations is the best place to start. We are here to help explain all the options and risk factors to ensure you make the right decisions.

Minimum Equine requirements

-Rabies

-Tetanus

Equine Core Vaccines-Recommended for Kawartha and Surrounding Area

-Rabies

-Tetanus

-Eastern/Western Equine Encephalitis

-West Nile

Additional Vaccines-Based on Risk Factors/Exposure

-Equine Influenza

-Equine Herpesvirus

-Potomac Horse Fever

-Strangles

To ensure adequate protection against diseases listed above, horse need to vaccinated with strict/proper protocols. This includes a proper PRIMARY SERIES where two vaccines must be given (in most cases) 3-4 weeks apart to give a full year protection. After the primary series has been completed only a single yearly vaccine needs to be given as a booster. Although each vaccine is different, and some do require additional boosters to provide proper protection during "at risk" periods, single yearly boosters will be appropriate for most animals.

To make sure your animals are protected we will always ask if a primary series has been administered and if no proof exists we will recommend boosters be given as a precaution. The risks of not being protected greatly out weight the risks of over vaccinating if a proper series had been given previously.
